I was commissioned to make four short documentaries about the British Season. I wanted to give a sense of each event without ever showing the main act. I wanted to frustrate the viewer. The camera was always just around the corner, over the bush or in the next field. When Brits see a TV listing for these familiar annual events, they know what they are going to see, or think they do. Coverage is always the same. I wanted to surprise them and show a different take on a familiar story. So in the Henley Regatta film I didn't want to show an actual rowing race. You hear it and feel it going on but never see it. Hopefully this works the senses more than the usual spoon-fed TV. — Dave Young
