We Paint the Walls

About the Song:

"I wrote and recorded We Paint the Walls in 1999, when Kosovo was displacing all its people, I was going through a break-up, and the world seemed awfully sorrowful. It's about how we are responsible for creating our own pain, and how, when deep enough, that pain seeps from the soul into our bodies. The refrain is based on an old Irish lullaby my mother used to sing to me. I play guitar and viola on this track as well as singing the vocals."

Lyrics:

the walls are painted purple now
the children are asleep.
they're lying in their tents
within a feverish mess of dreams,
and they'll start awake, once or twice,
during the evening's themes.
we paint the walls in purple
in the pleasing cool of deep.

i feel it in my ankles now.
i feel it in my feet.
i feel it in my heart, it weighs.
i feel it in my knees.
the politics of interests,
the pride to not concede.
the walls are painted purple now,
the children are asleep.

the day before we parted
a man cried in the street
he sobbed there while i held him
after kneeling by his feet
his body small and trembling
apologized to me
we paint the walls in purple
in the pleasing cool of deep
