At 29th Street and 8th Avenue the agreed-upon route was obstructed—police moved the barricade aside to funnel the protesters into a pen between 29th and 30th Streets, a block where the sidewalks were sealed off and without subways entrances to escape down. When the marchers suspected a trap, panic ensued.
